Cairo

Egypt, a country mostly covered with deserts and famous for its pyramids, I always wonder what do people there eat. While I was volunteering in a non-profit organization, I had the chance to meet this girl from Cairo which she also came here for university. I got really curious about Egypt since it was one of the ancient countries and I have never been there, I always ask her about Egypt. She was very nice and she taught me a traditional Egyptian dish as well as brought me to one of the authentic Egyptian restaurants in Toronto.

The dish that she taught me to make is call Moussaka. Moussaka is a dish made of eggplants, tomatoes, minced meat and peppers. It is a traditional dish which people usually eat it as a meal. We first fried the eggplants and and minced meat. Then, we put the ingredients together and let it bake for 45 minutes. Sometimes people bake it with cheese as well. We ate Moussaka with pita bread. Sometimes people also eat it with rice as well. It tastes pretty good because I like it when the eggplants are soft and the meat are flavourful.

Other than making a dish, I also have the chance to try one of Egypt’s traditional sandwiches. The sandwich which I tried was called Pharaoh’s Po’Boy. It is a sandwich with deep fried shrimp and topped with garlic and sesame sauce. My friend told me I can usually find it in the street vendor. I really enjoyed the sandwich and I am looking forward if I have the chance to go to Cairo, I would definitely try their street food.
